The Heritage Education Commission, founded in 1978, is an independent, non-profit commission developed for the purpose of creating, initiating and conducting programs and projects which aid in the preservation or restoration of the cultural heritage of the Upper Midwest region.
The Family History Workshop, a full-day seminar, is sponsored each fall to offer regional genealogists an opportunity to update their skills and learn from both experts and their peers.
During the 1980s, we interviewed over 200 local leaders in the areas of agriculture, arts, business, communication, education, government and politics, homemaking, law and law enforcement, medicine, religion, and service organizations. Since 2001, we have interviewed nearly 70 veterans, most of whom served during World War II. Most of the interviews have been digitized and are available on RED, the institutional repository of Minnesota State University Moorhead.
An important part of our Family History Workshop is announcing the winners of our annual research awards. We encourage all historical researchers to consider submitting projects for award consideration in several different categories. This is an excellent way for your research to receive the recognition it deserves and to make it more broadly available to other researchers. Award winning projects are submitted to the Archives of the Northwest Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University at Moorhead.
