Since 1981, the Heritage Education Commission has given awards to genealogy books, research, and websites at the annual Family History Workshop.
Have you completed a project that preserves your family history, adds to the body of historical knowledge for a certain locale, or that helps others with their research? The Commission encourages you to submit your work for award consideration!
The award winning books are housed at the Northwest Minnesota Historical Center, which is a part of the Minnesota State University Moorhead Archives.
Anyone may view these books by visiting the MSUM Archives during open hours.
We encourage all historical researchers to submit projects for award consideration in the six different categories. This is an excellent way for your research to receive the recognition it deserves and to make it more broadly available to other researchers. Award winning projects are submitted to the Northwest Minnesota Historical Center at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Archives.
To submit a book, research, or website, fill out the project entry form, and mail it along with your book to:

DownloadThis award, originally titled “The Aubrey Zube Jones Award - Genealogical Emphasis”, was established in 1981 for printed or duplicated family histories.
The Heritage Education Commission wishes to
encourage local historians to take the last step in their research effort by creating and sharing a compilation of their regional historical scholarship. Formalizing research into a book allows others to enjoy and benefit from your hard work and adds to the collected
knowledge of a town, county, state, or region.
This award, originally one category in the G.K. Haukebo Award, was established in 1988 for non-book projects that preserve historical information. The focus of these history projects can be on people or places and can be in a variety of formats including videos, scrapbooks, diaries, journals, and family reunions. The Historical Preservation award recognizes the value that non-book projects have to family history researchers. The various formats allowed in this category can bring history to life in ways that may be difficult to capture in a book.
This award, originally one category in the G.K. Haukebo Award, was established in 1988 for projects that advance the research skills of family history researchers. Researchers are constantly improving their sills through workshops, books, and training videos. The Advancing Genealogical Skills award recognizes projects that improve the skills of genealogical researchers. Helping others develop their genealogical skills leverages the skills you have to make other researchers better at their hobby.
This award, originally one category in the G.K. Haukebo Award, was established in 1988 for projects that assist family history researchers in locating genealogical source materials. The Creating Genealogical Sources Award recognizes projects that create or increase the accessibility of sources materials useful to genealogical research. Projects may create brand new source data that was previously unavailable, or they can take old source data and present it in a new way that makes it more useful, more current, or more broadly available.
This award, originally titled Bernard Gill Family History Youth Award, was established in 2013. The Heritage Education Commission wishes to encourage young people to explore their family history. These projects can often comprise the first step in fostering a broader interest in family history research. Youth projects can be of any type covered by the other award categories, including family history books, regional history books, historical information in non-book formats, or anything related to the process of doing family history research.
